At Reliant, TVs are our whole world, so we will help you not only find the perfect TV for your space but also find the right size for your viewing pleasure. Let’s get started!
What Size TV Should I Get?
Striking the perfect balance between price, quality, and size is crucial in finding a television that is right for you. While it is natural to want to go for the biggest TV possible, to create the ultimate home entertainment set-up, you need to make sure that there is plenty of space within your home to accommodate the size of your chosen TV!
While you might want to go for a larger TV, you need to make sure to consider your overall budget, the resolution of the screen, and the amount of space you have available.
Consider Your Space
You don’t want to end up grabbing a TV that is too big to fit in your living room, but you also don’t want to grab a TV that is too small and leaves you squinting to make anything out. You need to find a suitable middle ground between the two.
Not only do you need to make sure that there is plenty of space for the television itself, but also that there is plenty of space for you to take it all in. The larger your screen size, the further from the screen you will need to sit in order to fully enjoy it. If you are only working with a small living room space, with not much space between walls, then you may need to go for a much smaller screen!
Let’s say you have a 65 inch TV. In order to fully take in the image on screen while still enjoying the greater fidelity, you would need to be situated between 5 to 7.5 feet away from the screen. For a 40 to 43 inch TV, you would instead need to situate yourself around 3.5 to 5 feet away from the screen. This generally applies to 4K television screens. For screens that are 1080p or below, you may need to sit further away so as to not make out individual pixels.
Consider Lighting In The Space
Not only do you have to consider your own relation to the TV, but also the relation of things like light fixtures and windows. While many modern TVs feature anti-glare technology, to allow you to comfortably watch during the daytime, you still need to ensure that you position the screen away from windows.
Let’s say you have a large window on one wall in your living room. You would want to avoid placing your new TV on the wall directly opposite from it. This is so that you can avoid sunlight shining directly onto the screen during specific hours of the day. You’ll also want to avoid putting your TV directly under a window, as harsh sunlight will make it much harder to focus your eyes on the screen!
Make sure to consider the positioning of your light fixtures too. You want to avoid any light reflecting off of the screen in the later hours of the day, so try to place your light fixtures, such as lamps, somewhere where they won’t reflect. We recommend placing some soft lamps on either side of the TV, to create a cosy look that provides plenty of light, but won’t result in reflections.
Glare is caused by light reflecting against the screen of your TV. Whether it be natural sunlight or the warm glow of your lamp, you want to make sure that your TV is positioned correctly to avoid reflections!
Consider The Price
If you are hoping to stick to a strict budget when choosing the perfect TV, then we would strongly recommend going for a slightly smaller option. The larger the TV’s screen size, the higher its price usually is. If you don’t want to spend too much, then make sure to carefully consider the size of each TV you look at, and maybe opt for a small TV.
However, if you definitely wanted a larger television, but you have a strict budget to stick to, then you could always compromise on size, quality, or features.
Consider The Resolution
If money is no object, then you will want to carefully consider the overall fidelity of the screen, as well as its size. Generally, the larger the screen, the better the quality will be, as there is room for many more pixels.
This is not always the case, as there are many 4K TVs that range massively in terms of size. However, if you are looking for an 8K TV, then you may need to opt for a larger option, in order to accommodate all of those extra pixels! If a screen is of a much greater resolution, then you will also be able to sit much closer to the screen, as you will not be able to make out individual pixels!
How To Measure TV Size
When shopping for the perfect television, you may occasionally find yourself unsure of the specific dimensions of a particular screen. Luckily, it’s very easy to measure. Start off at the top-left corner of the screen, and then measure the distance between it and the bottom right corner of the screen. This will be done in inches.
If you are looking to just measure the size of the screen itself, make sure not to include the bezel (the frame around the screen) as well. A 50 inch TV would be a little more than 50 inches in size if you were to include the bezels!
If you are looking to find out whether an entire TV will fit within a specific space in your home, then you will want to measure its total height and width. This will help you to determine how to display the TV on a specific shelf, or perhaps within a TV cabinet.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can A TV Be Too Big for A Space?
Absolutely. Not only could you find yourself in a situation where a larger TV simply does not fit through the door, but you may also find yourself in a situation where the TV is uncomfortable to watch. An improperly placed TV could lead to neck strain as you position yourself awkwardly to watch it!
Is It OK to Have A Big TV In A Small Room?
Provided there is plenty of space to safely keep your larger TV, it can be okay to have a larger TV in a much smaller room. However, you will want to make sure that there is plenty of space between you and the screen, so you can enjoy it fully.
Does A Big TV Make A Room Look Smaller?
If you have a larger TV that takes up a significant amount of space and is flanked by walls, then it can very easily make a room appear much smaller at a glance. This is one of many reasons why it is recommended to ensure that a large TV has plenty of space.
Where Should You Not Put A TV In A Living Room?
Generally, you should avoid placing your TV anywhere where it will be directly opposite a significant source of light. As such, avoid placing your TV opposite a window, or a large lighting fixture. Such light sources will easily reflect from your TV screen, creating an annoying glare that will make it difficult to watch anything!
