Resolutions can now climb as high as 8K, on some TVs. Taking the already revolutionary 4K resolution and quadrupling it, to achieve a truly perfect image. 8K resolutions quite literally add extra pixels in order to enhance the fidelity of any image.
But to take advantage of that increased pixel count, do you need a larger TV screen? Are larger screens better on an 8K TV? Or could you save money and go for a smaller display?
These are all burning questions that have long kept TV fans from making the jump to 8K. Luckily, they’re all questions that our Reliant tech experts have now spent a number of years answering! Today, they’re going to lend their expertise, so we can find out whether 8K looks better on a large TV!
Is 8K Better On A Large TV?
On a technical level, 8K resolutions do look better on larger displays. This is because the larger screen size offers much more space for the pixels to spread out. If you were to look at an 8K image on a 75-inch TV, for example, you’d be able to more easily notice the improvement in fidelity, rather than on a 32-inch TV.
It’s also worth noting that larger screens can also benefit from 8K resolutions. When lower-resolution images are spread across larger screens, it becomes incredibly easy to make out individual pixels. This can ruin the viewing experience. A 98-inch TV, for instance, would benefit far more from an 8K image rather than a 4K image.
8K images do look better when they’re able to stretch out slightly. Stuffing an 8K image into a small 32-inch TV would simply be a waste. You would not be able to easily notice the benefits!
To make the most of an 8K image, you will generally want a screen size above 75 inches. At this size, the benefits of 8K are all the more clear. However, if you are a little short on space for a new TV, then a 65-inch TV would also be a suitable option. It offers enough screen space for the image fidelity to be shown off.
Are 8K TVs Worth It?
Ultimately, this will depend on the TV size you’re opting for, and the amount of space you have available for your TV!
If you are looking for a TV with a screen size over 77 inches, such as an 85-inch TV, then 8K is recommended. 4K images can still look totally amazing at this screen size, but there is a risk that they will appear stretched. 8K resolutions, on the other hand, look totally natural at this screen size.
An 8K resolution also ensures that a brand new jumbo-sized TV can also make the most of 4K content. Many 8K TVs are equipped with upscaling technology, carried out by the onboard processor. Essentially, this technology is used to improve the fidelity of any image, as it’s displayed by the TV. The processor will receive each frame of a piece of footage, and find ways to improve it before displaying it. It will do this by smoothing out areas of high pixelation, and by improving the richness of colours.
When used with 4K content, this can result in some incredible imagery that looks as though it were always 8K! It’s worth noting that this technology is far from perfect. For the most part, 8K upscaling involves your TV guessing what would be best for a single image. While it does use the wider context of a piece of footage to ensure consistent results, sometimes it can enhance images in ways that aren’t quite right. Regardless, it’s a technology worth using.
Do You Have Enough Space For An 8K TV?
We mentioned a few times throughout this article that 8K resolutions look best on larger TV screens. However, if you’re going to grab a larger TV, you need to make sure you have the space for it.
Even with an 8K resolution, sitting too close to a large TV screen can completely ruin your immersion. You’ll be able to see individual pixels, and you’ll have to move your head all over just to see the entire image. Preferably, you need a viewing distance of 1.2 times the size of the screen. At this distance, you’ll be able to see the entire screen without having to move your head or eyes. This ensures a more comfortable viewing experience without your immersion being broken!
In order to make the most of a larger 8K TV screen, you need to ensure you have enough space to view it from. If you’re working with a smaller room, you will need a smaller TV screen.
If your space is too small to accommodate the recommended distance between the screen and your sofa, then it’s recommended to opt for a smaller screen.
